After my experience as a corps member in Washington D.C., a CMA at Institute, and a Program Director with TFA-NY, I began working with the Center for Court Innovation, developing and implementing restorative justice programs, including educational and therapeutic interventions for families involved in the NY State court system. I later taught courses for women at Riker's Island jail in NYC and subsequently served as Program Director serving 300 students pursuing associate's degrees while incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison in California.
I now direct the Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP). Through GPEP, Goucher College offers men and women incarcerated in Maryland the opportunity to pursue an excellent college degree.
We offer Goucher College courses to students at two state prisons. We also provide college prep courses at these institutions to prepare promising students for college. This semester, we are offering 70 students a total of nine courses including Chinese Philosophy, The Sociological Imagination, Intro to Theater, and Algebra II. In courses at the two prisons, students are held to rigorous academic standards identical to those on Goucher's main campus. Courses are taught on site by Goucher College faculty and occasoinally by other oustanding professors from nearby colleges and universities. The GPEP receives no public funding and is made possible by private grants and individual donations. Courses, books, and supplies are provided at no cost to GPEP students - we are grateful for the generous support of our donors.
I am inspired by the transformative effect of education empowering students as scholars, as leaders, as role models and providers; by the hard work of our students, faculty, and partners; and by the contributions students make to the college community and to all of the communities to which they belong. I would love to hear from TFA alumni engaged in similar work or who are interested in becoming involved. To find out more about GPEP please visit our website (under construction right now) or contact me directly!
